Following on from their narrow 1-0 victory against fellow NWCFL promotion chasers Bury AFC, Vauxhall Motors beat Winsford United away from home on Good Friday 4-1.
It was a narrow game against Bury, Michael Burkey finding the winning goal before The Motors made good use of their defending attributes.
Mick McGraa’s side, against Winsford, would reach half time a goal up with a brace from Burkey before Lewis Buckley and Bobbie McDonnell provided the finishing touches after the break.
With recently signed defender Adam Hughes coming off early in midweek with an injury, he was unavailable for selection. However, Burkey starred again.
The Motormen started the game in fantastic fashion as Burkey continued his great goalscoring form, Lewis Buckley played the ball to the tricky forward who finished on the volley.
However, Winsford equalised two minutes later through Daniel Boden as he sprinted through the left hand side and sweetly half-volleyed the ball into the net.
It had been a manic opening and the hosts had a good chance to put themselves into the lead but a free header in the area was put well wide.
Yet Burkey, who had had a sensational half, would find the back of the net once again just before the break as no one was able to tell whether his effort, which creeped down and went into the top right corner, was a cross or a shot.
Ten minutes into the second half, Lewis Buckley would extend the scoreline. It was another unbelievable goal by Vauxhall, the striker lobbing Arran Lyons before being replaced by Bobbie McDonnell.
Moments later, the visitors’ keeper Sam Booth made a great save to keep the two goal cushion and before the final whistle blew, Jordan Deer squared the ball to McDonnell who slotted home at the other end.
Jake Parker could have added another for McGraa’s men as he ran through on goal but his effort raised high over the bar.
Vauxhall Motors are next back in action on Monday afternoon as they take on AFC Liverpool at The VanEupen Arena and with Avro getting beat in The Isle Of Man, the league title could be won.
