Motors win on Holmes’ first outing

Danny Holmes’ resilient Motormen gifted their new manager a dream start, beating high flying Clitheroe 2-1 at The VanEupen Arena.

The Motors were hovering precariously above the relegation zone, following their defeat to Runcorn Linnets last time out.
It took a late Jordan Deer strike from a free kick to take all three points but it was a performance packed with quality.

Forward Michael Burkey came back from the treatment table as he was selected in the starting eleven, Craig Curran made his first league start.

A good start from the hosts saw Curran’s effort excellently blocked on the line, Joe Brandon crossed the ball into Burkey who fed the former Tranmere man. Jordan Deer got close too, his shot cannoning off the bar.

Striker Lewis Buckley came off the bench to replace Curran just before the visitors opened the scoring at the other end, Sefton Gonzales netted a perfectly timed header with 27 minutes played.

‪Holmes’ resilient side were unwilling to go into the break in a losing position and Adam Hughes equalised the scoreline as he tapped the ball in after the keeper spilled the initial effort on goal. ‬

‪Clitheroe started the second half well and had the ball in the back of the hosts’ net on the 52nd minute however the officials flag was raised.

It was on the 67th minute that creative midfielder Deer struck, his set piece sailing into the top corner to put his side in the lead!

Sean Moscrop had the chance to extend the score to three but he blasted over the bar. ‬

Vauxhall Motors will now turn to their attention to a further two home games, Leek Town the visitors on Tuesday night.
