Lee Robinson’s Vauxhall Motors U18 side were in action on Wednesday night as they progressed through to the first round of the FA Youth Cup with a narrow victory over Buxton.
Last season, Motors won three trophies including the Cheshire Youth Cup and with their league season starting on Saturday, it was vital that they went into the campaign with continued good spirit.
The first half got off to a relatively slow start as both teams, which were of good quality, aimed to find their feet.
The first penalty shout of the ninety was by The Reds as they believed that their goalbound effort struck a Motors hand.
However, all claims were dismissed.
Vauxhall worked the ball well to strike their first shot on target when Joel Robinson worked perfectly with Zak Catesby.
Catesby’s effort from just outside the area was saved comfortably by Tom Gyte in the visitors net.
Buxton looked the stronger outfit and their efforts nearly payed off when the ball bobbled in front of Motors keeper Oliver Hawksworth. Luckily for the hosts, the ball didn’t find itself on target this time round.
The game was very well contested yet a scrap would ensue when Kyle Foster pushed Daniel Camaj to the floor as the visitors were progressing down the right wing. Foster received the first booking of the game for this incident.
Buxton finished the half in a dominant fashion but they were unable to fire any efforts on target as an ambitious long range strike from Danny Hancock went just wide of the left post.
With the half time whistle blowing with a goalless scoreline, the hosts came out for the second forty-five in a stronger manner and they would soon be rewarded with a goal when a cross from the right wing was cleared into the path of left back, Jamie Gann, who fired his effort powerfully past Gyte.
The lead was nearly doubled as they would soon hit the crossbar and despite Buxton bringing the ball into positive area’s of the pitch it was Motors that looked stronger on the attack.
The scoreline would remain narrowly in Motors’ favour and it was a victory well deserved as Robinson’s youngsters saw off strong competition to progress into the first round of the FA Youth Cup.
