Mick McGraa’s Motors look to continue their positive start to the season, following their wins against Kendal Town and Lower Breck in the NWCFL Premier Division, as they return to action on Saturday 6th August when they travel to Shropshire to face Whitchurch Alport in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.
Alport were formed in 1946 in the football season that followed World War Two, being named after Alport Farm in Alport Road, Whitchurch, which had been the home of Coley Maddocks, a local footballer who had been killed in action in the war.
They’re managed by Luke Goddard and the club’s owner is Ben Woollam. Alport play in the Midlands League Premier Division which is level 9-12 on the footballing pyramid.
The club’s past successes include winning the Shropshire County FA Huddersfield Cup in 2019, the same summer in which they were crowned the Shropshire Senior Cup Winners.
Alport’s man to watch is centre forward Alex Hughes who netted 28 goals in the 2021-22 campaign. However, McGraa’s side will have attackers to watch out for also which will make this tie an interesting watch.
Anyone related to Motors, or with great lower-league football memories, may remember Vauxhall’s win over QPR in the First Round of the Cup at Loftus Road. This win was 20 years ago and last year the game was remembered by a documentary that was put together by the club’s media team for a night to remember for the squad that played that day.
It would be great for the area if Motors were able to pull off a similar feat this year in the cup.
The venue for the game is Yockings Park, with the match kick off time being 3pm and all support for the Motors is appreciated. Ticket information and more can be found on Alport’s club website and social media platforms.
