Motors 1 v 0 Skelmesdale United
A massive game approached in Ellesmere Port for both sides on a glorious Bank Holiday weekend, with the Motormen trying to make it three wins from three, and three clean sheets in three games at home.
The Motormen lined up with Mikey Dixon in goal, Kyle Smyth, Joe Heath, Anthony Gardner and skipper, Tom Mitchell, making up the back four, a three in midfield with Haydn Cooper, Ben Holmes and Leo Riley, and up-front Simon Thelwell, Michael Burkey and debutant, Aaron Smith.
Skelmersdale United created the first chance of the game, with their striker heading the ball straight over Dixon’s goal, to keep the game at 0-0. The next chance properly got the Motormen into the game, with Ben Holmes dragging his shot just across the keeper’s left, going behind for a goal kick.
It was a comfortable start to the game for both sides, without creating too many chances, and Skem forcing Mikey Dixon into a few good saves with his feet and hands. Both sides went in at half time, goalless.
A quiet start to the half, with Motors looking on top, with Aaron Smith and Ben Holmes creating chances and forcing Skem goalkeeper and captain, Ben Barnes, into a few strong saves to keep the game at a draw.
A double substitution within five minutes saw Simon Thelwell and Ben Holmes making way for Jack Kelly and Kieran Garner-Knapper. A few minutes of Knapper creating chances on the left wing resulted in him beating the full back, cutting inside, and squaring the ball towards Jack Kelly, who smashed the ball home to put the Motormen one up, with just over twenty minutes to go.
McGraa made his final substitution just five minutes after the goal, with debutant and great performer, Aaron Smith, being replaced by Greg Drummond. The Motormen created chances thanks to Knapper, Kelly and Burkey, resulting in corners with a solid work rate for VMFC.
4 minutes was added on, and a few close chances for Vauxhall Motors, with the full-time whistle going and McGraa’s side making it three wins from three games, and three clean sheets out of three at home this season.
We now move on to Bank Holiday Monday, where we face Runcorn Town, away from home.
