CHEADLE TOWN 2, VAUXHALL MOTORS 2 (after extra time)
From a position of command at the interval with the Motormen leading 2-0, they finished up hanging on for a home replay in this Buildbase F. A. Vase tie at Cheadle Town. The replay is on Tuesday evening at the Syncreon Arena at 7.45pm.
After a sluggish start, Motors gradually took command of the first half and duly edged in front on 18 minutes when Demase Kiwanda fed Ben Holmes through the middle and he made no mistake from 14 yards, slipping the ball beyond the stranded home keeper. Eleven minutes later it became 2-0 when Kiwanda had his effort deflected only for Holmes to fire into an empty net.
At this point, the tie looked almost as good as sorted, but on the resumption, Cheadle took just two minutes to claw themselves back when striker Rhys Webb fired home after good approach play across the box to make it 2-1. And seven minutes from the end of normal time, the hosts, who were now on top, forced the tie into extra time, when Webb again striking a superb effort beyond Matty Lavelle in the visitors goal to level up the scores.
Cheadle now looked the stronger side and Lavelle had to make one fine save to deny the hosts, but in the second period of added time, Motors rallied and Kiwanda twice went close to clinching the tie for Motors – though the game was almost lost with the last kick of the game as Cheadle went close via Rhys Clooney.
