Vauxhall Motors were dealt with a shockingly cruel, late blow as they were defeated at home to Widnes on Boxing Day.

The Motormen were looking to claim their fourth win in five games, following on from Saturday’s victory away at Witton Albion.

Danny Holmes’ side were in the lead at the break as Joe Brandon netted in the opening minute. However, Widnes got themselves into the lead on the 80th minute before they netted a controversial penalty in the dying moments after Motors captain Tom Mitchell drew the game level.

The signings of both Joe Levey and Jay Harvey were announced a hour before kick off, they both slotted onto the Vauxhall bench.

It was a fast start by the hosts, the game being played at Vauxhall’s VanEupen Arena, as winger Brandon finished off an excellent solo move just 15 seconds into the match.

The visitors went close to levelling the tie on two occasions inside the first half.

They were convinced that the ball had been put the ball over the line but the referee believed that the Motors defence cleared the effort just in time.

Then, moments before the interval, Vauxhall keeper Ally Hughes produced a great save to tip the ball over the crossbar when an effort deflected off George Nugent.

Widnes managed to get themselves into the lead in the 80th minute after Will Jones netted their first.

It had been a strong performance by the visitors, Vauxhall’s defence was struggling with the challenge.

However, Captain Tom Mitchell would level the tie up in the 90th minute before his side conceded a penalty, to the shock of many, which was cooly put away.

Holmes’ side would finish the game with ten men as full-back Ethan Gouldbourne was dismissed, following the goal.

Vauxhall are next back in action on New Years Day as they travel to face neighbours City of Liverpool. Widnes play host to Clitheroe on the 30th.
