Vauxhall Motors were defeated 2-1 at home to Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday night as both sides continued their preparations for the 2023-24 season.
It was an end to end game, with brothers between the sticks as The Motormen’s keeper Sam Booth faced Crewe’s Tom.
The League Two opposition, Vauxhall’s second this summer after facing Tranmere Rovers, started strongly as their hard work resulted in free kicks in dangerous areas.
Crewe were passing the ball up the pitch well, their quality showing as Ethan Gouldbourne was provided with a tricky test at left back.
With the hosts’ defence remaining strong, the opener eventually came ten minutes before half time as Max Woodcock headed his effort off the post before it trickled in.
Vauxhall got close to levelling the tie with a Tom Mitchell header in added time but a fantastic save denied him.
A strong team talk from head coach Alan Morgan at the break ensured his side started well and The Motormen received a penalty on the stroke of the 50th minute which striker Lewis Buckley slotted powerfully.
It would be the visitors that scored the next goal though as a quick counter attack was finished by Regan Griffiths in a composed manner.
The EFL outfit went on to win under the lights but it wasn’t through a lack of effort from Motors as Michael Burkey dropped to his knees when he failed to find the back of the net after a great run through on goal.
Vauxhall Motors are next in action on Saturday afternoon as they face Congleton Town in the NWCFL Champions Cup at The VanEupen Arena.
