Wythenshawe Amateurs 1 v 2 Vauxhall Motors
The smirk on Vauxhall manager Mick McGraa’s face at the end of this tough league game, said it all, as they came from behind to snatch all three points deep into injury time, to maintain their amazing winning sequence into double figures.
In an even first half, in which Haydn Cooper struck the bar early on, the hosts grabbed the lead on 18 minutes when Ryan Briddy cut inside from the right and squared the ball for Dan Egan to fire home first time from ten yards.
The Motormen fought back and gained an equaliser on 34 minutes when winger Michael Burkey cut inside from the right and fired home from just inside the area beyond Kyle Haslam in the home goal. Motors then survived a strong penalty claim just before the break and a linesman’s flag ruled out a home goal for offside on 58 minutes.
But from that point on, Vauxhall upped the tempo to put the home defence under increased pressure. Numerous free kicks just outside the area were conceded by the home side as well as many corners as Motors turned the screw.
And just when it seemed as if they would have to settle for a draw, the visitors grabbed a deserved winner in the fourth minute of added time following one of those corners. Skipper Tom Mitchell managed to head the ball back across goal and in swept Glenn Rule to turn the ball into the net for the winner from close range.
That victory was their 16th such league success in their last seventeen outings dating back into last season and helped them close the gap on leaders FC Oswestry Town to seven points with a massive five games in hand.
