Jarrow 1 v 2 Vauxhall Motors (after extra time)
Vauxhall Motors marched into the 2nd round of the F. A. Vase on Saturday thanks to an extra time winner from Joe Brandon, but they had to do it the hard way coming from behind early on.
Having already accounted for both Swallownest and Cheadle Heath Nomads in the qualifying rounds, this was to real tester for Mick McGraa’s side and they didn’t get off to the best of starts. They lost full back Kyle Scarisbrick through injury after just five minutes and then went behind with 12 minutes played, when a swift home attack down the right saw Glen Hargrave cross for Liam McBryde to head a looping effort beyond the reach of Ryan Crump in the Motors goal, much to the delight of the majority of the record-breaking crowd of 309.
Vauxhall responded with a header from Glenn Rule from Danny Cross’ centre but his effort struck the bar and whilst the visitors enjoyed the best of possession and numerous corners leading up to half time, there were no clear cut openings.
Jarrow were basically playing on the break, but those thrusts always carried a threat and twice they wasted good opportunities to increase their lead before Motors began to turn the screw. Brandon and Haydn Cooper both went close but time was drifting away. McGraa threw on both Michael Burkey and Kieran Hamm up front and within three minutes of his introduction, Hamm earned a penalty when he attempted to race between two defenders only to be brought down inside the area.
Karl Noon tucked away the spot kick with a well taken strike into the bottom left corner for his ninth goal of the season and more importantly, the equaliser. Motors thought they had won the tie at the end of normal time, when Noon poked home following a goalmouth scramble, but the referee disallowed it.
Extra time saw Motors gain even more possession and twice went close before Brandon capitalised on a loose ball inside the box following a corner, to smash home from 14 yards on 104 minutes which proved to be the winner, as the visitors dominated the remainder of the added time.
